Are You a Boob?
2012
Woman…who are you? What are you; mystical, smart, enchanting, and compassionate? What defines you? Are you a body part? You know what I mean! Are you defined by your size, shape or overall “looks”?
Or are you like me? Simply a real woman…with hopes, dreams, thoughts, feelings, talents, gifts, strengths and weaknesses?
Frankly, I’m tired of being “viewed” as anything else! I am certainly NOT a boob, butt, waist, plump lips or any of the like.
Women’s Rights, Feminism, Sexual Freedom…I say, whatever! While the concepts and movements produced some great results, a few things have gone a little too far and we find ourselves being bound to a slavery of sorts once again. Seriously, women of the past fought against “cat calls” and sexual harrassment (to name a few things). Yet today we endure much worse than a simple cat call! Women are very degraded and dehumanized in images and roles loaded with hypersexual attributes. Women and girls are being objectified and experiencing sexualization to a degree never before seen in history. All the while, under the guise of sexual freedom. This is not sexual freedom! It is un upscaled form of “cat calling” and harassment; it is bondage. It is sexism! I am greatly offended and the more I speak to women, I find they are offended too. But, they have been made to feel that they shouldn’t be offended and should be ashamed of their feelings so they keep it inside. She is told that “she” is the problem and that the issue is about something other than what it truly is. Blatant distortions of reality are held in this sexualization and it is causing major health issues well known in the psychology world.
If you ARE like me and the many other women I have spoken with, you know exactly what I mean. Have you felt it? Has your spirit
been broken? Have you been made to feel less than by media, a man, mean girls and such? Has it left you feeling like nothing when you are actually beautiful on the inside but your value is seen in your body and worth determined by how “sexy” you are?
Are you as sick of it as I am? I say it is time for a NEW Women’s Revolution!

Great post Sharon! Though not a subject that I can relate to that well, I certainly agree that the objectification and sexualization of women is inapproporaite and just plain wrong. It isn’t, as you mentioned, freedom but another form of bondage that needs to stop! Unfortunately, many people groups suffer from these issues. I for one am fed up with the gay labels that make every gay man in the world a flamboyant sex addict that dresses and acts like a woman or on the flip side wears leather and carries chains.Labels that demean, objectify and demoralize are wrong, period! Maybe I relate more than I thought…lol!
I think a good rule of thumb for everyone to go by is this: How would you feel or like it, if it were your mother, daughter or sister? Society seems to want to put others in little bubbles and say it is okay for “this” group but not for “that” group. It is seen in men and women relationships sometimes as the madonna vs whore complex/dichotomy. But, if only one would stop and think “what if it were my….”
Thanks for visiting Carl!
I hope you will come again soon. Feel free to download the free report on my main page.

Thanks! Come again soon!
Thanks Nathan.
You say it CARL! LOVE IT!
Not sure how to respond. I don’t experience the abuse, I don’t know anyone who does… am I in a bubble? or a part of a country that respects all of us up here in Canada. I don’t know… but if you experience crap, I support you to release them! great job today!
Hello Patricia
I have experienced this but I am not alone by far. It is a far reaching problem spanning down into the younger generation. I found this to be true when I was teaching and developed a “program” to help my students because of the damage I saw happening. Lo’ and behold, The APA is now saying the same thing I personally saw and have personally felt. I have a free report you can access through the home page which you may find very enlightening!
Thanks for visiting and I hope you come again soon!

it’s time for a revolution… viva revolution!
Hi Sharon….thank you for being so brave! It’s about time someone said something. I completely agree!
Great post Sharon! I completely agree with you! It is starting so early!! I have the hardest time finding appropriate clothing for my 7 year old because all the clothes make them look like, for lack of a better term, hoochies! It’s sad what society has done. We just have to work harder with our daughters to reverse it!
Absolutely a topic close to my heart! I have always taken up for the “Underdog” so to speak…My background lends itself quite nicely to women’s rights and women’s leadership. It no longer about getting even..its about shifting perception, and we need to begin with our own and stop blaming others. We, us women, need to be the change
Great post!
When my daughter hit middle school she began listening to Britney Spears. Then, her clothing began to change. So, I told her I wasn’t very pleased with her choices and I invited her to listen to Ani DeFranco – an alternative rock artist with a strong message for women. I often think my daughter’s commitment to be a woman in all its glorious manifestations goes back to my willingness to challenge the corporate message to pre-teen girls, and then never letting up.
I have witnessed this with others but not personally. I think a lot of it has to do with how I was raised…sometimes things are just not to be allowed into your life…and treatment such as this was one! Thanks for sharing!
Great post, Sharon! I agree, it is time for a new women’s revolution! I’m not sure if things are still as bad or backwards as when I was a young but none of it is ok!
Hey Alexandra
Sure there have been improvements in many areas for women. But other areas have gainfully gotten worse as through my own reflection and now through statistics. We are living in a sexually saturated culture and the focus is mainly on women as sex “objects”. It is out of control and being pushed down to younger and younger ages. The “ads” are being likened to that of tobacco ads in the damage it is doing.
Thanks for visiting and I hope you come again soon!
I know what you mean and it gets to me. I had seeing so much focus on a woman’s body and nothing else. I grew up wanting to look like a Barbie with no idea that that could never happen.
Great thinknig! That really breaks the mold!
Thank you.
Great topic Sharon! I believe while some things have gotten better, other things have become worse. Have you seen the young girls shopping at Victoria’s Secret. When I was that age, I wouldn’t of been caught dead there. Not sure I understand what that is all about??
Gretchen, it is all about money! Women and girls are under so much pressure and media influence to be that “model” wearing “those” clothes..look like that, be like that because “that” is what a female is suppose to be and that is what worth is based upon. This is the message we females get everywhere we look! Companies are targeting the younger crowd now and the outcome is not good. You can get my free report from the home page. It talks about this very thing a little bit more.
I hope you come again!

I have to wonder if we are more protected here in Canada, like Patricia says I think there is more respect up here…it certainly isn’t as prevalent as it must be in the States. That being said, I think the objectification of anyone, especially in use in the media, should be stopped.
I so hear you! I’m not sure the same methods (ie. a ‘new revolution’) would help much. But it’s clearly time for some serious re-examination of this entire subject!!!
Like Sherie and Patricia, [we are from the same province] I have not experienced this. I don’t know if this is on target or not but shows like Toddlers and Tiaras and dress codes like ‘Hooters’ are offensive to me. The arguement may be however, for Hooters, [as with Pinterest] it is all about the visual. It is the visual bringing the customers in.
Toddlers and Tiaras I have no excuse for. Sorry to offend. I think it is mothers living through their daughters or at the very least exploiting their daughters outward beauty which should not be allowed at that age. [and certainly not displayed on TV, thus promoting bad behavior)
Hey Suzanne
Thank you for your comment. There are some areas/countries etc. making efforts to stop some of what is occurring. For instance, some countries are now requiring a warning label of sorts to be placed on images in magazines that have been retouched/photoshopped. That country recognized the crisis it (and other aspects of media) was creating and began doing something about it. We aren’t seeing that here. As I have mentioned before, it is getting worse according to statistics and according to my own mind over the years. There is a free report on the home page which will give you on target data presented by The American Psychiatry Association and task forces assigned to specific elements around this topic as well as private university research.
Thanks again and I hope you return soon!

This is so true! Great article!
Sharon, It’s time for change to happen and not sure if a revolution is the answer. I would hope that would not be the case, but not sure what would be the alternative.
Wow!! What a wonderful post and important message! This is one of the main reasons I went to school, received my education/degree and have my own business…simply because I was ‘tired’ of the labels and comparison with others…being your own boss helps but does not make you immune to the judgements of others…I choose to ignore and do ‘my thing’ ! If you don’t like it then go somewhere else:) I’m all for a revolution…let’s do it!! Stop the judgement of others, their looks, their sexuality, their personality, their lifestyle..etc..be you and be proud!!
Great article..and I love the title
Wow! You got it spot on, girlfriend! I say, let’s bring it on and teach our young children to stand up and demand respect from all sides! Great post…
Love your article Sharon! As a mom of an almost teen daughter this is such an important topic for helping to shape her mind.
Great post Sharon! We need quite a few social changes in our country!
Love this article (and the title!!) Thank you for taking a stand!!
Thank you for sharing such a very powerful post, Sharon! I will definitely be coming back to read more of your great wisdom and insights!!!
Thanks for standing up for women. Our men are actually having a hard time too! Part of the problem has been the collapse of the family and the lack of fathers and role models at home. If the media is the biggest influencer in our young men and women, we are in trouble.
I completely agree! If you notice on the home page in one of the slides, I bring up the fact that the male population (our sons, grandsons and yes even the grown men) are being heavily impacted as well. The sad thing is, so many do not even recognize the impact. More on this in another blog post! :0 Thanks for visiting and I hope you return.
Fortunately I haven’t experienced anything like this. Can’t say I’ve ever been treated like anything other than what I am. It is alarming to see the way people dress sometimes, and hear the song lyrics demeaning women, but women have to take some responsibility for this. If your clothes leave your boobs and butt hanging out, how do you expect people to treat you? I appreciate hearing your point of view Sharon, but I do feel like I live in a different world than that.
Hey Jennifer
Thanks for visiting and reading the article. Unfortunately, it isn’t just my point of view. It is factual with hard data to back up the way things are going and the damage that is being caused. I do agree, we have to be responsible about our choices as women including our dress. However, media influence is huge! It it didn’t work, the companies wouldn’t pay the money they do to have the marketing and advertising driven largely by sexualization. To deny this influence is like denying the influence tobacco advertising had and thus is no more. There is an article in the form of a free report on the home page. It covers many of the stats as well as the most recent article called “We’ve Come A Long Way, Baby”…
Thanks again, Jennifer, and I hope you return!
Powerful article highlighting something I have experienced along with my daughters. It really is impossible NOT to be affected by the sexualization and objectification of women – unless you live in a cave somewhere. We are completely saturated with these messages to the point where I believe we don’t even notice them. Thank you for shining a very bright spotlight!
Ronae
You are right, we become desensitized and our conscious brain doesn’t notice. But our subconscious brain sure does…and our subconscious brain is where most of the action happens in deriving our beliefs etc.
Thank you for your comment!
I wish to show some thanks to this writer just for rescuing me from this crisis. Because of exploring through the world-wide-web and meeting tips that were not helpful, I thought my life was well over. Existing devoid of the approaches to the problems you have resolved by means of this guide is a crucial case, and those which could have adversely damaged my career if I hadn’t encountered the blog. The mastery and kindness in controlling all the details was precious. I don’t know what I would’ve done if I hadn’t come upon such a solution like this. I can also at this point relish my future. Thank you so much for the reliable and sensible guide. I will not think twice to endorse your web sites to anyone who needs and wants assistance on this topic.
